HostGator is still easy to start with, but the cheapest headline price is not the number that should decide the purchase. Our owner bought and used a HostGator Baby account in December 2023. The dashboard and email setup were straightforward, while WordPress editing felt slow, Cloudflare setup failed repeatedly and reaching a person for cancellation took about 20 minutes.
HostGator has changed its plans since that test. For this 2026 update, we checked the current product page, renewal-price chart, backup policy and refund rules. We have kept the original experience as dated evidence, removed old claims that no longer apply and withheld a numeric score until a fresh account completes our full benchmark.
HostGator quick verdict
HostGator can suit a beginner who wants conventional shared hosting, cPanel, SSL, email and guided WordPress setup in one account. Current shared plans advertise managed WordPress updates, a migration tool, Cloudflare CDN with Argo Routing and security features. The entry plan now supports more than the single website allowed by the older Hatchling offer.
The trade-off is long-term value. HostGator's official renewal chart lists Hatchling at $10.99 per month on a three-year renewal, $13.19 on a one-year renewal or $17.59 month to month. Backup retention is limited, promotions apply only to the first invoice, and our old account did not deliver the responsive working experience we wanted.
Our position: reasonable beginner tooling, but compare the total renewal cost and backup setup before buying. Our 2023 experience raises enough performance and support questions that we will not publish a current score until HostGator is retested.

What we actually tested
The owner purchased a Baby shared-hosting account for one month in December 2023 and installed the same MoveAroundSite WordPress fixture used in other hosting reviews. The invoice was $12.85 for that month. The widely promoted $3.50 monthly equivalent required a 36-month commitment and was not the price paid for this test.
Onboarding required a PIN and phone verification, which was a useful security signal. There were also several promotional prompts before reaching the account. Once inside, the portal was simple, cPanel was included and creating an email account was straightforward.
The weaker experience appeared while working inside WordPress. Opening pages and using Elementor often felt roughly five to ten seconds slower than on the owner's usual hosting. That is a subjective workflow observation from one shared account, not a controlled server-wide benchmark, but it mattered more in daily use than a single cached score.
Historical speed and Cloudflare findings
The MoveAroundSite fixture was tested before and after adding WP Rocket. Optimization improved the result, but the owner still considered it slow. Unfortunately, the old article stored the result images as embedded data rather than durable standalone test files, so we cannot responsibly republish exact metrics that we can no longer audit.
The 2023 portal presented a Cloudflare option, but it was not active by default. Repeated activation attempts failed. The original conclusion was therefore limited to that account and date: the integration did not work for us. It was not proof that Cloudflare itself or every HostGator account was unavailable.
HostGator's current shared-hosting page now advertises “Cloudflare with Argo Routing” across the plan cards. That is encouraging, but it is a provider claim until our new test verifies activation, DNS behavior, cache status and whether any part becomes a paid add-on later.

These visit figures are HostGator's “ideal for” estimates, not guaranteed capacity. Shared accounts compete for server resources, and 100 websites do not receive 100 separate allocations. A busy store, membership site or page builder can outgrow shared hosting much sooner than a set of small brochure sites.
The public product page lists free SSL, malware scanning, a web application firewall, DDoS protection, static and object caching, SSH, WP-CLI and WordPress staging. Feature availability can differ by plan, account generation and offer, so preserve the checkout and plan comparison when purchasing.
HostGator pricing: calculate the second term
When checked on July 22, 2026, HostGator's official coupon page promoted up to 70% off a Baby plan on a 36-month term. The live price cards are campaign-driven, and the exact promotional amount was not consistently exposed outside checkout. A current independent capture listed Hatchling at $2.75 and Baby at $3.50 per month on three-year introductory terms. Treat those as offer snapshots, not permanent prices.
The official regular-price chart is the more useful basis for comparing long-term cost:

The table shows monthly equivalents; HostGator bills the selected term upfront. Its current regular-price chart does not list the shared Pro plan, even though Pro appears on the product page. That inconsistency makes the renewal amount shown in your cart and portal the only number to rely on for that plan.
Before paying, save the exact plan, term, total due today, renewal total and included trials. HostGator states that promotional pricing applies only to the first invoice. A professional-email trial can renew at $2.99 per month, and tax is additional where applicable.
Backups need a second layer
HostGator's current help center describes a Basic Weekly Backup that stores one restore point at a time; a new backup overwrites the previous one. Email is not included in that site-level backup. Its broader policy also says automatic backups are provided as a courtesy and are not guaranteed.
For shared hosting, HostGator documents automatic cycles only for accounts below specified storage and inode limits. Manual cPanel full backups have size limits, and requesting a copy or restore from a courtesy backup can cost $49. This is not enough history for a business-critical site by itself.
Our recommendation is to keep an independent off-site backup with multiple restore points and periodically test a restore. Do not use the host's courtesy copy as the only copy of the site, database or email.
Support and cancellation
During the 2023 test, the owner's path to a human passed through a chatbot and several prompts. Cancellation support took about 20 minutes. That missed our five-minute response target and is preserved here as one dated interaction, not a claim about every support request.
The current site advertises 24/7 chat support, with phone support on higher shared tiers. A proper retest will send the same migration, backup and performance questions at different times, record time to a human and assess whether the answer actually resolves the issue.
Refund policy: now 30 days, with exclusions
The old article referred to 45 days. That is no longer the published policy. HostGator currently offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for shared, WordPress, VPS and dedicated hosting, but excludes services with a monthly term, domain registration, setup and administrative fees, and add-ons.
You must complete cancellation and contact support within the first 30 days. A domain supplied with the plan may be deducted from the refund, and HostGator says a refund can take up to two weeks to reach the original payment method. Buyers choosing one month specifically to test the service should note that the monthly term is excluded.

Final verdict
HostGator remains accessible, but we would not choose it from the promotional price alone. The current plan limits are more generous than the old one-site catalog, and cPanel, SSL and migration tooling can make setup approachable. The official renewal cost and limited backup model weaken the value proposition.
Our own test found an easy portal but a slow editing workflow, a failed Cloudflare setup and too much friction reaching cancellation support. Because that evidence is from 2023, we are not transferring it into a 2026 rating. HostGator stays unscored until a new account passes repeated speed, uptime, load, backup, Cloudflare and support tests.
